What you are buying

Magnesium with nothing else in the capsule

The active here is the same one any good glycinate gives you: magnesium chelated to glycine, an amino acid, delivering 120mg of elemental magnesium per capsule and absorbed through amino acid pathways rather than left to compete for mineral transport.

What separates this bottle is everything that is not in it. Almost every capsule on the market carries more than its active. Flow agents, binders and fillers go in because they make the manufacturing run faster, not because they do anything for you. Magnesium stearate is the one you will see most often.

Pure Encapsulations formulate the entire range hypoallergenic. No wheat, no gluten, no egg, no peanuts, no magnesium stearate, no hydrogenated fat, no artificial sweeteners and no artificial colours. If you have ever reacted to a supplement and never worked out which part of it, this is the range that removes the variables.

Why this one

Four reasons to pay the extra for this bottle

There is a cheaper magnesium glycinate on this site and we will happily point you at it. Here is when this is the one worth buying instead.

01

No magnesium stearate

Magnesium stearate is a flow agent, a lubricant that stops powder sticking to the machinery while capsules are filled. It is in a large share of supplements on the market because it speeds up production. It is not in this one.

02

Hypoallergenic across the whole range

Free from wheat, gluten, egg, peanuts, hydrogenated fat, artificial sweeteners and artificial colours. Pure Encapsulations build every product in the range to the same standard, so if this bottle suits you the rest of the range will too.

03

120mg elemental, stated plainly

The number on the front is elemental magnesium, the mineral you actually absorb, not the weight of the whole compound. Every capsule is a round 120mg, so working out your daily total is addition rather than arithmetic.

04

Room to find your own dose

The label allows one to four capsules a day, so you can start at 120mg of elemental magnesium and move up in 120mg steps until you land on the amount that suits you. A product that only comes as one large dose gives you no way to do that, and no way to come back down.

Dosage & Administration

One to four capsules daily.

Standard dosage
1 to 4 capsules daily. Each capsule contains 120mg of elemental magnesium as magnesium glycinate, which is 29% of the daily value.
With food
Pure Encapsulations direct that you take it with food. Magnesium absorbs better alongside a meal and sits more comfortably.
Timing
Many people prefer the evening or before bed, because magnesium glycinate supports relaxation and nervous system health. If you are on more than one capsule, spread them across the day rather than taking them together.

What else is in the capsule

Every capsule on the shelf holds the active plus whatever it took to manufacture it. That second list is where these ranges separate, and it is the list nobody prints on the front.

By the numbers

The numbers worth comparing

Other ingredientsTwo

Cellulose and water, which is the capsule itself, plus ascorbyl palmitate. That is the entire list.

Before you order

The part most sellers leave out

Talk to your doctor first if you

  • Have reduced kidney function or kidney disease
  • Take digoxin, or a diuretic
  • Have been told to limit magnesium for any reason
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding and unsure of your total intake

Space it apart from

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, by at least two hours
  • Bisphosphonates for bone density
  • Thyroid medication
  • High dose zinc and iron, which compete for absorption

Magnesium is cleared by the kidneys. If your kidneys are not working normally it can build up, and that is the one situation where more is not better. Everything else on this list is about timing rather than danger: magnesium binds to some medications in the gut and stops them absorbing properly, which a two hour gap solves. If you are not sure, book a free 15 minute consult and we will go through it with you.

Questions we get asked

You are paying for what is left out rather than what is put in. The RN Labs glycinate is a good product and gives you more elemental magnesium per capsule for less money. This one is formulated hypoallergenic across the entire range, with no magnesium stearate, gluten, wheat, egg, peanut, artificial sweeteners or artificial colours. If fillers have caused you trouble before, that is worth the difference. If they never have, buy the RN Labs one.
It is a flow agent, a lubricant that stops powder sticking to the machinery during capsule filling. It is in a large share of supplements on the market. For most people it is a non-issue. For people who react to things and cannot pin down what, removing it removes one more variable, which is the whole design principle behind this range.
The 180 capsule bottle at $82 works out near 46c a capsule against 53c for the 90, and at one a day it lasts about six months. Start with the 90 if this is your first bottle.
One capsule is 120mg of elemental magnesium, which the label puts at 29% of the daily value, and the label allows one to four capsules a day. That gives you a range of 120mg up to 480mg, so you can find your own level rather than being stuck with whatever a single large capsule decided for you. The number worth comparing between products is always elemental magnesium, not the total weight of the compound, which can read several times higher and is what cheaper labels lead with.
With food, which is what Pure Encapsulations direct, and most people choose the evening. If you are taking more than one capsule, spread them across the day rather than taking them together.
Mostly yes. Keep high dose zinc and iron at a different time of day, since they compete with magnesium for absorption. Space it at least two hours away from tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates and thyroid medication.
Glycinate is the form chosen to avoid that. The loose bowels people associate with magnesium come from poorly absorbed forms, mainly oxide and high dose citrate, leaving magnesium sitting in the gut. Glycinate is taken up through amino acid pathways instead.
Yes. Orders go out from our clinic in Nelson to anywhere in New Zealand.
