What you are buying

Magnesium your gut will actually absorb

Magnesium is involved in more than 300 enzyme systems in the body, which is why it turns up on so many shelves. What almost no label makes obvious is that the form it comes in decides how much of it you keep.

The cheap stuff is magnesium oxide. It looks impressive on a label because the compound is mostly magnesium by weight, but a large share of it is never absorbed, and the portion left sitting in the bowel draws water in behind it. That is the laxative effect people blame on magnesium in general.

Glycinate is different. The magnesium is chelated, bound to glycine, an amino acid, and it is taken up through amino acid pathways rather than left to compete for mineral transport. RN Labs deliver 150mg of elemental magnesium in every capsule and state it plainly on the front.

Why this one

Four reasons this is the bottle people reorder

Magnesium is the biggest category in this store, and four of our ten best sellers this year are magnesium. Here is what separates the bottle people come back for from the one they finish and forget.

01

150mg elemental in every capsule

The only number worth comparing between magnesium products is elemental magnesium, the actual mineral you absorb. Plenty of labels quote the weight of the whole compound instead, which can read three or four times higher. This one states 150mg elemental per capsule, so one capsule is one serve and there is no arithmetic.

02

Glycinate, not oxide

Magnesium oxide is cheap to make and cheap to buy, and most of it passes straight through you. What passes through is exactly what loosens the bowel. Glycinate is chelated to glycine and absorbed through amino acid pathways, so far less of it is left behind in the gut.

03

36 cents a capsule at the larger size

The 180 capsule bottle is $65, which works out near 36c a capsule against 39c for the 90. At one capsule a day that is roughly six months of magnesium for the price of two takeaway coffees a month.

04

Listed with the TGA, AUST L 383255

That code on the label means the product is entered on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and made in a licensed facility under the same GMP manufacturing code that applies to medicines. A great deal of what gets sold as magnesium online carries nothing of the sort.

Dosage & Administration

One to four capsules daily.

Standard dosage
1 to 4 capsules daily. Each capsule contains 750mg of magnesium glycinate, which is equivalent to 150mg of elemental magnesium.
With or without food
You can take it with food to improve comfort and absorption, or as advised on your product label.
Timing
Many people prefer the evening or before bed, because magnesium glycinate supports relaxation and nervous system health.

The numbers worth comparing

Elemental magnesium, the mineral you actually absorb. Cheaper labels quote the weight of the whole compound, which here would read 750mg, five times higher.

The label range, 150mg up to 600mg of elemental magnesium. Most people sit at one or two.

Before you order

The part most sellers leave out

Talk to your doctor first if you

  • Have reduced kidney function or kidney disease
  • Take digoxin, or a diuretic
  • Have been told to limit magnesium for any reason
  • Are pregnant or breastfeeding and unsure of your total intake

Space it apart from

  • Tetracycline and quinolone antibiotics, by at least two hours
  • Bisphosphonates for bone density
  • Thyroid medication
  • High dose zinc and iron, which compete for absorption

Magnesium is cleared by the kidneys. If your kidneys are not working normally it can build up, and that is the one situation where more is not better. Everything else on this list is about timing rather than danger: magnesium binds to some medications in the gut and stops them absorbing properly, which a two hour gap solves. If you are not sure, book a free 15 minute consult and we will go through it with you.

The 180 capsule bottle at $65 is the better buy once you know magnesium agrees with you. It works out near 36c a capsule against 39c for the 90, and at one a day it lasts about six months. Start with the 90 if this is your first bottle.
Both are magnesium glycinate and both are well absorbed. This one gives you more elemental magnesium per capsule, 150mg against 120mg, at a lower price per dose, which makes it the straightforward everyday choice. Pure Encapsulations is the one to pick if you react to fillers, because that range is formulated hypoallergenic and is free from magnesium stearate, gluten, wheat, egg, peanuts, artificial sweeteners and artificial colours.
Almost always because it is magnesium oxide. Oxide is poorly absorbed, and the portion that stays in the gut draws water into the bowel. That is the same mechanism a magnesium laxative uses deliberately. Glycinate is absorbed through amino acid pathways instead, so far less of it is left sitting there.
With food, and most people choose the evening. Magnesium absorbs better alongside a meal. The label allows one to four capsules a day, and if you take more than one, spread them across the day rather than taking them all together.
Mostly yes. Keep high dose zinc and iron at a different time of day, since they compete with magnesium for the same absorption pathways. Space it at least two hours away from tetracycline or quinolone antibiotics, bisphosphonates and thyroid medication.
Not at a normal serve. The laxative effect people associate with magnesium comes from poorly absorbed forms, mainly oxide and high dose citrate, leaving magnesium in the bowel. Glycinate is the form chosen specifically to avoid that.
Magnesium is a mineral you are topping up rather than a drug you are dosing, so it is not an overnight thing. Give it a full bottle before you judge it, and take it consistently rather than only on the days you remember.
Yes. Orders go out from our clinic in Nelson to anywhere in New Zealand.
