Serrapeptase—also known as serratiopeptidase—is an enzyme belonging to the serine protease class. As a protease, it breaks down proteins into smaller components called amino acids. Serrapeptase was originally discovered in the digestive tract of silkworms in the 1960s. It is often called the “butterfly enzyme” because its strong fibrinolytic activity enabled the silkworm to dissolve its tough, fibrous cocoon when it was ready to emerge.
